چکیده

The long-term goal of this project is to improve the high-resolution model forecasts by developing a real-time globally re-locatable capability to initialize/assimilate the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS) land-surface model soil parameters. The partition of the model surface sensible and latent heat fluxes in the land-surface parameterization is sensitive to the initial soil temperature and moisture content. A proper estimation of the soil conditions thus has many important implications ranging from its impact on boundary layer thermodynamic structure to improvements in modeling the hydrological cycle.

Analysis of updraft velocity in mesoscale convective systems using satellite and WRF model simulations

Updraft vertical velocity is an important dynamical quantity which is strongly related to storm intensity and heavy precipitation. It can be calculated by direct observations, NWP model, and geostationary satellites which can provide the possibility of measuring this quantity with high temporal resolution. This research analyzed updraft velocity based on six derived parameters from INSAT3-D and...

Derivation of Mesoscale Atmospheric Motion Vectors Using Coms Images at Kma/nimr

Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) is the first Korean geostationary satellite, which is located in 128.2°E launched in 2010, and it is currently under normal operation. Atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) derived with high resolution satellite images are useful for analyzing mesoscale motion such as convective clouds and ageostrophic flow. National Institute of Meteorologic...

Advanced Numerical Methods for NWP Models

The long-term goal of this research is to construct the Navy’s next-generation global numerical weather prediction (NWP) model using new numerical methods specifically designed for distributedmemory and vector computers. To distinguish it from the current Navy global atmospheric model, the navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS), we shall refer to this new model as the Na...

Atmospheric Kinetic Energy Spectra from Global High-Resolution Nonhydrostatic Simulations

Kinetic energy (KE) spectra derived from global high-resolution atmospheric simulations from the Model for PredictionAcross Scales (MPAS) are presented. The simulations are produced using quasi-uniform global Voronoi horizontal meshes with 3-, 7.5-, and 15-km mean cell spacings. KE spectra from the MPAS simulations compare well with observations and other simulations in the literature and posse...

The COSMO-LEPS mesoscale ensemble system: validation of the methodology and verification

The limited-area ensemble prediction system COSMO-LEPS has been running every day at ECMWF since November 2002. A number of runs of the non-hydrostatic limited-area model Lokal Modell (LM) are available every day, nested on members of the ECMWF global ensemble. The limited-area ensemble forecasts range up to 120 h and LM-based probabilistic products are disseminated to several national and regi...
